Finding Your Voice: The Photographers Journey from Composition to Personal Style

Dates:  November 23 & 24, 2019
Location:  Banded Rock Studios, Ladner BC.

A comprehensive two-day workshop that looks at Composition and how its understanding leads to Artistic and Personal Style.

This workshop will examine much more than the ten basic rules of composition including:

1. The Science and Psychology of Composition
2. The Importance of Subject Matter
3. Beyond the Ten Basic Elements of Composition
4. Medium-Specific Controls (*Photo, Paint, Film)
5. Placement/Point of Focus
6. Space (Subject Space, Background & Negative Space)
7. Balance (including how to recognize balance)
8. Compositional Notions & Devices
9. Breaking the Rules (Are there any rules?)
10. Understanding Eye Movement
11. How Display Intent affect Composition

And will further define and explore Style:

11. What is Style
12. Identifying Artistic & Photographic Style
13. Defining your Style
14. How to refine your Style

There will be some homework to bring to class on Sunday. Once you register you will be given instructions.

Although this is a Photography workshop, it is perfect for most Visual Arts including Film, Painting, and Illustration. Based on class composition, Jean-Francois will discuss some other Mediums when appropriate.

This two-day workshop is $189.00 per person plus GST & PST for a total of $211.68. Breakfast (Muffins, Donuts, Fruit) is included both days and Tea and Coffee will be provided throughout the day. Students to provide their own lunches. We will break for 1 Hour for lunch each day. There are several local food vendors nearby in Ladner where classes are being held. (Address provided once registered)

Classes will run from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday in Ladner, BC in a comfortable Boardroom environment. Lunch will be from (approx.) 12:30 to 1:30 each day. There will be Q&A time throughout the class and from 4:30 to 5:00 each day.

Refining Your Voice - From Concept to Project

As requested by students of "Finding Your Voice - A Photographers Journey from Composition to Personal Style"; this two-day hands-on workshop helps photographers refine their Composition and Style via this project-based workshop. Fine Art Printing  -  Hands On (Sat & Sun Weekend)

Dates:  May 2020 (dates tba)
Location:  Banded Rock Studios, Ladner BC

Join me for this two-day intensive workshop focused on the art and craft of fine art digital printmaking. While we will cover every aspect of printing from capture to handling of prints, this workshop is designed to take the complexity and frustration out of printing.

It is designed for anyone who wants to develop a strong foundation in all aspects of digital printing. If you want to perfect the ability to consistently produce prints you are proud of and that reflect your vision, this class is for you. A good general knowledge of Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop and a laptop computer are highly recommended. Note: This class is NOT meant as an in-depth Post Processing class. Printer Calibration and RIP Technologies will not be covered.

Limited to just 6 students, the first day (half of) the workshop focuses on teaching you important concepts and techniques of modern printmaking. On the second day (in the second half) you will put it all into practice with two of your images. We’ll work on making your images come to life, from processing to final print, and transform your own digital files into something you can hold and touch, something to be proud of.

Printing your own work is a rewarding experience that adds to your creative potential. You will learn how to craft an expressive print that conveys your vision as a photographer and visual artist whether you’re just getting started with a new printer or just want to take your printing skills to the next level.

Introduction to Lightroom CC (4 Thursday Evenings) - Class has started!

Do you have a lot of images to manage and edit? Adobe Lightroom CC is the perfect tool for any digital photographer who needs to edit and sort images quickly and professionally. Whether you're an amateur or a seasoned professional, Lightroom will help you get the results you need in a lot less time.

In these classes, you will learn how Lightroom can help you prepare, edit, and organize your photos quickly and effectively. Using Lightroom’s non-destructive editing, you'll be able to control how to edit your images and make additional enhancements later. You'll learn to apply changes to multiple images while developing an efficient image processing workflow. You'll also learn how to organize, tag, keyword and make collections with Lightroom's powerful organization tools; and fine-tune the overall color and lighting of your images. You can use Lightroom as a companion to Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Photoshop Elements, or other digital photo editors, and you can export or print your work in exactly the size or format you need.

We will cover the Lightroom Catalog, the Library Module, the Develop Module, and the Print Module including Exporting for Print, Web and Mail.
